Should I Stay or Should I Go? The Counteroffer Dilemma

You’ve made the decision to look for a new opportunity after months of feeling overlooked, underappreciated or ready for a fresh challenge. You’re excited about the prospect of a new adventure, meeting new people and exploring roles that could help you take the next step in your property career.

After a couple of interviews, you’re delighted to receive an offer for a new position that promises progression, development and fresh opportunities. You let your current employer know your plans and prepare to hand in your notice, only to be met with… the counteroffer!

Suddenly, the decision doesn’t seem quite so straightforward.

On one hand, you know your current role inside out. The environment is familiar, you know your colleagues, and finally, you feel as though your employer recognises your value.

But on the other hand, you remember why you started looking for a new opportunity in the first place.

And so the dilemma begins. In the famous words of The Clash: Should I Stay or Should I Go?

Why do employers make counteroffers?

When an employee resigns, an employer may realise just how valuable they are to the business. A counteroffer might include a salary increase, a promotion, additional responsibilities or promises of future progression.

While this recognition can feel reassuring, it’s important to take a step back and consider whether the offer genuinely addresses the reasons you wanted to leave.

A pay rise might solve one problem, but what if your decision was driven by a lack of career progression, poor management, limited development opportunities or simply a desire for a new challenge?

These are bigger questions that deserve careful consideration.

Five questions to ask yourself before accepting a counteroffer

1. Why did I want to leave in the first place?

Be honest with yourself. Was it purely about salary, or were there deeper reasons behind your decision? Write down the main factors that prompted your job search and consider whether anything has genuinely changed.

2. Does the counteroffer address the real issues?

A salary increase might be attractive, but will it improve your job satisfaction, work-life balance or opportunities for progression? Look beyond the immediate financial benefit and consider what your working life will actually look like in six months’ time.

3. Will staying support my long-term career goals?

Think about where you want to be in the next two to five years. Does your current employer offer a realistic path to get you there, or does the new opportunity provide the development and experience you’ve been looking for?

4. How might my relationship with my employer change?

Accepting a counteroffer can sometimes change workplace dynamics. You may wonder whether your commitment will be questioned or whether future opportunities will be affected. Every situation is different, but it’s worth discussing expectations openly before making your decision.

5. What am I giving up by turning down the new opportunity?

It’s easy to focus on what you might lose by leaving a familiar environment. But don’t forget what attracted you to the new role in the first place. Consider the people you met during the interview process, the company culture, the opportunity to learn new skills and the potential for future growth.

So, should you stay or should you go?

There’s no universal right or wrong answer. Every candidate, employer and situation is different, and a counteroffer may be worth considering if it genuinely addresses your concerns and aligns with your ambitions.

However, it’s important not to let the excitement of a pay rise or the reassurance of being wanted overshadow the reasons you decided to move on.

Take your time, ask questions and make sure you understand exactly what is being offered. If promises of promotion, progression or development are made, ask for clear details and realistic timescales.

Most importantly, make your decision based on what is right for your career and your future, rather than the pressure of the moment.
